Today we are going to discuss what we know about the Willow series. We’d like to invite you to subscribe to this channel for more Willow content, and like and share this video. There may be spoilers for the upcoming series, so if you don’t want to know anything and want to go into the series fresh, you should stop watching this video now. In October 2020, Disney+ and Lucasfilm announced that they would bring a Willow series to Disney+. Knowing that most of Disney+’s live-action series have between six to eight episodes per season, we are looking at a wonderfully, immersive return to the Willow world that we know and love. Or are we? From what we know thus far about the series, it will not be following the storyline of the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy penned as a sequel to the Willow film by George Lucas and Chris Claremone in the 1990’s, so we don’t really know what to expect outside of the name Willow. But that doesn’t mean we don’t know anything. So let’s run down some confirmed facts about the upcoming Willow series. With the unveiling of the series logo by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy during Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020, the hype among Willow fans has been through the roof. We know that it is planned to premiere on Disney+ in 2022, and that it is being written by Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle. The list of producers is long, starting with Executive Producers Jonathan Kasdan, Wendy Mericle, Ron Howard, Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan. Bob Dolman is a Consulting Producer, Roopesh Parekh and Hannah Friedman are Co-Executive Producers, and Julia Cooperman is a producer as well. If that sounds like too many cooks in the kitchen, it may explain the series’ difficulty in nailing down a director, starting with Jon M. Chu who dropped out in January 2021, Jonathan Entwistle dropping out a few weeks later, and Stephen Woolfenden signing on as their replacement in July 2021. Now, the outgoing directors stated timing conflicts, but Lucasfilm has a long and sordid history with directors dropping out or being replaced under suspicious circumstances. Even with these warning signs, production on the series did begin in June 2021 in the undeveloped regions of Whales. There has also been filming done at Dragon International Film Studios in Whales. We also know a bit about the story, so let’s wrap it together with the known cast, which has also had its own bit of flux. The story will take place decades after the film, and centers around a whole new generation of heroes. The log line seems to be based on a princess named Kit, played by Ruby Cruz, who is destined to be future leader and queen of an undisclosed nation, who sets out to rescue her kidnapped twin, the prince, who is not named, but who could be played by either Dempsey Bryk or Tony Revolori. Kit is accompanied by Jade, played by Erin Kellyman, a servant training to become a warrior who is also Kit’s best friend and moral compass. Also accompanying them is Dove played by Ellie Bamber, an unassuming kitchen maid who proves she is the “chosen one” as she embarks on the journey, and Bookman, played by Amer Chadha-Patel, a thief and liar who joins the quest in exchange for getting out of prison. Boorman has clear echoes of Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan from the film. Exactly how Willow, played by Warwick Davis comes into play is unknown, but as this series is called Willow, one can assume the need for a great sorcerer or wise mentor may come into play. Also required and as yet unknown is who is or are the kidnappers of the prince and for what reason? I am hoping they don’t try to bring in a descendant of Bavmorda, though we do have Sorcha, her daughter, and Madmartigan who marry and raise Elora Dannan as their daughter and future queen. Whether the twin princess Kit and her kidnapped brother prince are from Tir Asleen or Cashmere is unknown, but if the writers lean on the Chronicles of the Shadow War’s expanded world, there are many possibilities for potential kingdoms they could come from. Warwick Davis has expressed the desire for Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley to reprise their roles as Sorcha and Madmartigan as well. Outro But that is all I know thus far about the Willow series.
