-Vitamin D is one of the nutrients your body needs to build and maintain healthy bones. This is because your body can only absorb calcium - the main component of bones - when vitamin D is present. Vitamin D also regulates many other functions in your body's cells. Its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties also support immune system health, muscle function, and brain cell activity. -Vitamin D is not found naturally in many foods, but it can be found in fortified milk, fortified breakfast cereals, and fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines. Your body also produces vitamin D when direct sunlight converts a chemical in your skin into an active form of the vitamin (calciferol). -The most severe consequence of vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in the body (hypercalcemia), which causes nausea and vomiting, weakness, and frequent urination.
